For 2013 all signs look to another upswing and more good news for the Utah Film, TV, Commercial and Modeling industry!

Raleigh Studios, a major motion picture studio will be located in Quinn’s Junction, east of Park City Utah. The deal, which has been five years in the making, also includes a hotel and entertainment center.

A lot of movies are filmed in Utah, but this project would bring something that the state has been lacking, an amazing soundstage.

Raleigh Studios is the largest independent motion picture operator in the country. It produces films like “Iron Man 2″ and “The Avengers.” The project, and the included soundstages, would allow Utah to compete with neighboring states for production. They should have the studio started in 2013, with an expected build-out over the next three years.

The other huge motion picture and television production facility that will be opening is the former Granite High School campus.

The public-private partnership will include a $40 million investment in the current campus buildings and eventually provide up to 1,000 jobs — including full-time, part-time, seasonal and temporary employment.

Together, Woodbury Corp. and Redman Movies and Stories will invest $8.45 million on the property purchase, up to $6 million in restoring existing buildings and another $25 million to construct future sound stages, office space, restaurants and retail buildings. It should be ready for film and TV show production by early 2013.

There is a new Jerusalem Movie Set built by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be used in producing Church projects. The new set is located on the LDS Motion Picture Studio South Campus in Goshen, Utah, less than 60 miles south of Church headquarters in Salt Lake City. It covers an area about the size of a football field and will be first used to create the New Testament Scripture Library Project. This will be a series of vignettes portraying important scenes from the life of Jesus Christ and the Apostles.

Currently Utah offers a 25% rebate or a 25% refundable tax credit. The state also offers a sales and use tax exemption for qualified goods and services, in addition to exemptions of lodging taxes for stays of 30 days or longer. This is for films, television pilots, series and commercials.

The New Motion picture incentive bill puts Utah high on the list of places
film production companies will choose to produce new movies and television shows. Utah has had successful T.V. Series in the past including Everwood, Touched By An Angel, Promised Land and Cover Me. Having these continual shows developed 1000′s of cast and crew in the Utah Film Industry

“The higher rebate will now make us more attractive to the studios and networks and more competitive with other states and countries,” said Marshall Moore, director of the Utah Film Commission.

The new law will boost the motion picture tax incentive from 20 to
25 percent of the dollars left in the state in the form of a fully refundable post performance tax credit or cash rebate. The Legislature also approved an ongoing tax credit fund of $6.8 million for the Motion Picture Incentive Fund (MPIF). Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert signed House Bill 99, Motion Picture Incentives Amendments, into law.

According to Governor Herbert. “The expanded motion picture incentive will enable us to position Utah and its talented motion picture and digital media work force to compete on a
global basis for the film and digital media industries. These are important industries to our economy’s future.”

Recent films that have received the incentive include all three “High
School Musical” movies, the Oscar-nominated “127 Hours,” and the
upcoming Walt Disney Studios’ feature film “John Carter of Mars.”

More than 800 films and television movies have been shot in Utah.
